5.0 out of 5 stars Best Earbuds on the Market

I received it and the seller is the Amazon UK. Saw some reviews that the buds are not worth the price and when I received it, they were not connecting my phone. But when I read the manual, it said to press the small buttons between the buds and it started working. First impression of sound quality was out of this world. Noise cancellation is super extreme silent. I have XM4 and Bose QC buds but this B&W Pi7 are my favorite. Item is new with plastic wrap as well.

2.0 out of 5 stars PI7, I tws da audiofili (?)
Reviewed in Italy 🇮🇹 on 27 July 2021

Neanche i vecchi auricolari mono facevano così schifo.

Controlli touch
Scarsi.

Batteria
Scarsa. 3 ore in aptx-hd a volume alto, senza anc o ambient mode.

Prezzo
Ovviamente.

NOTE VARIE

3.0 out of 5 stars Top Tonqualität, traurige Verbindungsqualität
Reviewed in Germany 🇩🇪 on 20 March 2023
Color: CharcoalStyle: Pi7Verified Purchase

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful sound quality - very happy purchase!
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on 20 October 2021
Color: CharcoalStyle: Pi7Verified Purchase
Let me start by saying that *sound quality* is paramount for me. I tried my wife’s Airpod Pro’s, not expecting stunning sound quality, but hoping that it would be at least “good enough” and that I would purchase a pair due to their flawless integration with all things in the Apple-verse (yeah, that’s my universe). I found the Airpod Pro’s … clear and clean, and effortless to use. But … I really was not thrilled with the sound quality. So began the search for something significantly better - that led me to these Bowers & Wilkins PI7’s.

Like you, reading here, I found contradictory reports. At least one thing in common in almost all reviews was that these sound wonderful (they do!). Unfortunately, some folks reported trouble - difficulty connecting, Bluetooth dropouts, poor signal from the case/transmitter when using them with non-Bluetooth native devices (like an old-era iPod), etc. I almost did not order them, but I’m glad I did.

My observations here are based on using the PI7’s with: an iPhone X, Apple TV HD, MacBook Pro ca. 2016, and, yes, an old click-wheel iPod. First things first, I love the sound quality! As with any in-ear monitor, the *fit* is critical. Without a good seal, you will have poor sound - terribly weak bass and other distortions. I have large ears and I use the largest of the three included ear-tips. I recommend using the largest tip that you find comfortable. The PI7 earpieces themselves are a bit large. I have no problem with them, but if you have particularly small ears … you might find they don’t fit comfortably. The only way to know is to try.

As long as they fit, and you use the proper size ear-tip (to get a good seal), the sound is glorious! Ok, remember, they are wireless bluetooth earbuds. They are not going to dust the best wired headphones you have ever used. But, really, for what they are, they sound awesome!

Any trouble?? A number of folks reported trouble with the sound dropping out. I have not had any such trouble. This may be dependent on the particular devices &/or environment. As long as I stayed close to the broadcasting source, I had *no* dropouts. Now, if I walked across the room, around a corner, etc., then the sound would drop out. Maybe some other earbuds perform better in this respect. But for my use this was a non-issue. Another user reported that when using the case as a transmitter (say with an old iPod), the sound/connection was bad. Again, I have had no trouble here. While typing this I’m listening to a great playlist from my old iPod, being transmitted by the PI7’s case. The sound is wonderful!

I use the PI7’s paired to my Apple TV while I’m on the treadmill (an old & noisy one). Between the good fit/seal and the noise cancellation, the sound is excellent. Does the noise cancellation equal the over-ear Bose headphones I’ve used in the past? Probably not. But it is plenty good enough.

My use with phone calls has not been extensive; so far, callers have sounded very clear and they have said the same about me.

One area where I’ve had a little trouble with the PI7’s is with the Ambient Pass-Through. This is an important feature, allowing external sounds/voices to be “piped-in” with whatever you are otherwise listening to. As other people have commented, you need to use the B&W Headphone App in order to engage this feature. It would be nice if you could trigger it from the earbuds themselves. Additionally, sometimes I found the earbuds “reluctant” to engage the ambient pass-through. I’d have to toggle it a couple times.

All in all, though, I love these earbuds! Their operation may be a tad less good than the refined perfection of Apple’s own devices (in the Apple-verse), and there is room for improvement (quick, reliable, on-device engagement of ambient pass-through), but … if you *really* care about sound quality, these are by far the best wireless earbuds I’ve heard at this time.

Update 11/16/2021: I had complained about the Ambient Pass-Through toggle (in the app) not always working. Lately, I've had no trouble with it. There *is* a slight delay, switching in either direction. Not sure if this had made me feel it was not switching. In any event, no complaints with that now. Also, though I was happy with the fit of the included ear tips, I ordered a set of Comply tips to try. For me, the Comply tips were no more comfortable than the included tips. However, for me, the sound is much better using the INCLUDED TIPS. This may be ear-shape dependent. But I found that the included tips yielded better bass, overall clarity and richness. So, if you find you are happy with the comfort of the included tips - I'd stop there.

4.0 out of 5 stars Filled with trepidation I pulled the trigger!
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on 9 December 2022

I mean, talk about extremes! The Bowers & Wilkins PI7 buds really bring the hyperbole!

So there are the yays, “Absolutely best quality music reproduction! True audiophile buds! Bargain at the ask!” etc.
Just as extreme, the nays, “What good are they if they won’t (connect, stay connected, reconnect), right side battery dead, left side plenty of power, don’t have a volume control, app can’t see ‘em”!

So amid all that glorious uncertainty I’m looking at Amazon’s $299 offer on these $399 B&W (B&W!!!) buds! So I’m ready to go for it when I notice Amazon Marketplace has refurbs that are sold and shipped by Amazon for $225! O jeez, dare I chance that?
But wait, there’s more, haha!
I know it’s dangerous terrain, but I’m now down in the “used” depths. $200, $170, and holy crud, “used, acceptable” for, get this, $140! Still sold and shipped by Amazon (so no 3rd party headaches and returns are free and no hassle). $140? OMG! for $400 buds?
So no kidding, I throw caution and my better judgement to the wind and pull that trigger!

Well, I’m listening to Qobuz HQ tunes through my new (old haha) B&W(!) Pl7’s right now. So sweet! I’m hearing new details in music I’ve listened to dozens of times. The H and Q coming right through! I’m saying the sound is wonderful!

They arrived in a generic Amazon Marketplace box, but inside they’re packed well for safe travels, and pass my critical inspection with flying colours! Absolutely gorgeous Like New appearance!

Now I’m here to demystify all this connectivity bozanga. These buds hate Android and love iOS! It’s that simple. My LG G6 phone gave me all the reported connection issues straightaway. However my iPhones (10 Max and 8) just plain work! So no worries, the iPhone 8 is now my dedicated PI7 jukebox! And Life’s Good!

Have I mentioned the SOUND? This is the bargain of my hifi hobby life. Time to share my experience with all you (rightfully) hesitant shoppers out there. If you have an iPhone the B&W Pl7 earbuds get my solid
🤠👍! If you need Android-friendly buds, look elsewhere. (The Cambridge Melomania Touch sounds almost as great and work great with my LG.)

But if you’re seeking true audiophile sound in an earbud companion for your iPhone, this is it. As far as Marketplace experiences go, your mileage may vary. Stick with sold and shipped by Amazon and rest easy. Worst case, returns are easy.

Whew! Anyway, hope this helps. Happy trails!

PS You can connect almost anything that has an audio-out jack to the case, and listen to it using the buds. Analog? Use included 3.5mm plug to USB-C to the charger case. Digital? Laptop? Use the included USB-C to USB-C lead. The charging case is your own private radio station transmitter. So crazy, I hooked up my old AM-FM Cassette box. Listened to my old tapes through these audiophile buds. Fun!
Laptop worked great too! It’s like a free DAC thrown into the bargain. Not bad for less than $150.

3.0 out of 5 stars Superb sound, not so great with interference and wearability
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 16 March 2023
Color: CharcoalStyle: Pi7Verified Purchase
This boasts one of the best sounds I've experienced but the caveat is that you may need to reset/re-pair regularly to mitigate cutting out of the sound as these suffer terribly from interference. Wearability is also a hit-and-miss as the buds slip out too easily so make sure you give the ear caps a good try to land on something that works - if not you're better off trying an alternative than persisting with these solely on sound. Because of this, I ended up using these more when stationary.

Audio retransmitting and charging options are good for what you pay for a premium product because that's what they are based on their price point!!

4.0 out of 5 stars BEST Sound but...4 hours with ANC on...
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 11 October 2021
Color: CharcoalStyle: Pi7Verified Purchase
I had high expectations when it comes to B&W products. The B&W PI7 does not disappoint except for one thing and one thing only... its battery life. But before that let's talk audio.

Right out of the box, the buds sound pretty good but not amazing. It's the B&W signature tuning that you would expect. Not my 100% prefer sound signature and its app does not have an EQ setting. But man, once you adjusted the eq (if only you are able to, like me, my phone comes with an EQ in its sound setting.), these buds do not disappoint, they will sound like the best earphones you ever had. Superior soundstage and audio quality. Every aspect is on another level than every pair of earphones I ever had/tried (MTW2, B&O EQ, XM4s, MW08, Liberty 3 pro, 75t...). The 24-bit makes everything superbly clear and you will hear every little details in your music like you never before, I kid you not. These sound insanely good and so far they have my favourite sound.

The charging case as an audio transmitter is a pretty cool function too, plug the 3.5mm in, and you will be able to hear HiRes audio w/o having to disconnect and pair to another source. I reckon this can be an alternative to the lack of multipoint pairing in this pair (if your another source has a 3.5mm of course). The case itself is 'ok-ish' quality, not top-notch luxurious like the B&O EQ and MW08. It can feel a bit cheap as it is matte-finished, soft to touch plastic. The magnet tho, is strong. If you have slippery/wet fingers, you might find it hard to take out the buds from the case.

ANC is pretty good. You may find some reviewers complaining the ANC on these but I will say ANC is pretty good and quite strong (Just 1 level below the XM4s?). When walking down the streets, the pair cancels out most of the engine rumbles and you can barely hear people talking on the street. On a scale of 100, you are probably left with 20-30% of the noise (for XM4s, I'll say 10-15%) depending on how the buds fit.

The downside of these? The battery life. It is 2021 now and these only lasted at most 4 hours with ANC on... I mean, Senn's MTW2 which was released around 2 years ago can already do this number, B&W you can do better than this. Some people will find 4hours enough, but some will definitely say that hardly pass the line. Just see this as the trade-off for having a higher transmission rate between the buds.

In conclusion, if you want a pair that sits comfortably in your ears (, has the best sound (if you can tune the eq), you value the case as a transmitter, B&W brand itself and you have the money, then you should get these. THEY WON'T LET YOU DOWN (except for the battery life ;))

After going round in circles I came around to these and there is nothing better for sound. Clear, crisp and detailed. You'll want to relisten to everything you ever heard, whatever janre. They are simply superb.

I was lucky with the buds and the large buds offered a comfortable fit and perfect seal, offering great noise cancellation. Don't give up on them if the buds supplied dont fot your ears - just order some that will it is a small price to pay (extra) for sound that is sublime!

Went from Sony 1000mx3. to mx4 to 1more Evo (which are also fantastic)

Oh yes, I don't usually write reviews but felt compelled to. Whether you buy them or not makes no difference to me. I love them and they are the best I have ever owned.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great sound quality, but otherwise a pretty unfinished product
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on 31 January 2023
Color: CharcoalStyle: Pi7Verified Purchase
The sound quality is great as expected from B&W. The best I have ever tried. However, I encountered some issues that should have been found and addressed before releasing the product.
1) The right earbud runs out of battery faster than the left one! I don't understand why?
2) When using Auto/Adaptive option for the noise cancellation, sometimes all the bass, low-end of the music is gone!
3) The in-ear sensors are not working as expected. The earbuds are still playing until you put them back in the case.
I did not face any issue with the bluetooth connection, except some infrequent interference. But I am using iPhone 12 and I think these issues are happening with Android. One cool feature is the phone jack connection to the case that broadcast the music to the earbuds. Very useful feature on plane as well.

I will keep these because I really do like the sound quality. Hope these issues are resolved soon.
