5.0 out of 5 stars Budget without basic ...

Unlike a lot of people these days, to me this is just a phone. I don't use social media, or have narcissistic fascination with taking photographs of myself to upload to an internet that doesn't care. So, if that's you, look elsewhere for a review. If you're like me, this is a solid purchase that will see you well into the future.

Design/build quality

As with all Moto G series phones, it's built to a budget but it's done well. The blue case looks nice and like all Moto phones it comes with a clear gel case to protect it. The design is, overall, fairly in keeping with current 2020 styles, should that sort of thing bother you and it is relatively lightweight and slim. Big enough to be useful, but not so big it's an inconvenience.

Hardware

Decent enough octa-core processor/chipset and enough RAM to ensure transitions are smooth and you can multitask with no real lag. By that I mean real world lag, not the sort of millisecond lag that they mark a phone down for in reviews. If a second or two delay opening Chrome has an impact on your daily life, take a look in the mirror and have a serious word with yourself. It also has a fingerprint reader which, unlike many, works most of the time.

Screen/image quality

The 'notchless' screen displays at 720p and has a decent PPI. Colours are crisp and web pages are clear with no real blurred edges. No Gorilla Glass but that's just a brand name anyway. You'd still need to make a concerted effort to scratch the screen. Videos on YouTube etc look fine and for day to day use you'll struggle to notice the fact it isn't a 1080p panel. As for 4k, your eyes can't even see the difference, so don't worry about it not being present.

Battery life

So far, so good. Lasts several days even with moderate use and doesn't get hot under load. Charges fairly rapidly via the supplied USB-C charger.

Operating system

Stock Android, no bloatware, simple, as it should be.

Camera/image quality

Takes decent photos, even in low light. It's a phone, not an SLR camera, so don't expect professional images but certainly images that can be blown up to canvas size are well within the ability of this sensor. As for the 'selfie'/front facing camera, it's fine for WhatsApp calls but as for photographic image quality I've no idea as I'm more interested in the thing I'm looking at and don't routinely take photos of myself pouting or arching my back like I have a spinal problem.

Value

Overall, if you want a phone that accesses the internet, let's you watch videos etc and takes happy snaps, you'll still struggle to beat Moto G series phones in terms of value for money. This generation is no different, well made with stock Android so no bloatware or unnecessary software, it's easy to use and should last you for many years, based on its spec and the general hardware requirement curve.

4.0 out of 5 stars Slightly too big. WIFI very slow when Bluetooth is enabled. Android 10 could be better.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 3 December 2020
Colour: BlueSize: 64 GBVerified Purchase
My last phone was a LG G3 which had Android 7 (I think).
It had a 16:9 5.5 inch screen, and fitted perfectly in my (medium sized for a bloke) hand. It did everything you needed from a smartphone pretty much perfectly, it had a battery you could easily remove and replace. I would have kept it for another few years except that it didn't allow me to WIFI calling or to install some recent apps. I could even get a decent WIFI speed from it when Bluetooth was turned on.
The Moto G8 has none of these things.
It's a pretty good phone. But it's not like in the olden days when you upgraded your phone (or computer) after 3 or 4 years and went 'whao, this is *so* much better than the old one).
I'm not overly impressed with Android 10 either. Some stuff on the older version of Android was perfect, but they couldn't leave it alone, they had to move stuff around and make it worse, change for change's sake etc. They've even removed at least one fairly essential feature (to my mind). I used to have the option to have different volumes for notifications and for incoming phone calls. Not any more (at least not that I can work out). I must be some sort of weirdo for finding that feature useful?
Also, I've noticed with more than a couple of websites occasionally they will freeze, and to fix it you need to switch to another app and then switch back to Chrome before it will continue loading (never happened on the old phone).
When holding it in one hand, unless you have huge hands, it's pretty much impossible to reach to all four corners of the screen without dropping it.
The screen (as with most smartphones now) is stupidly wide and narrow (16:9 was better).
Possibly the WIFI / Bluetooth issue can be sorted out with many hours of troubleshooting, but life is too short and I don't use Bluetooth often on my phone.
Also - forget about using any of your old (perfectly good) micro USB charging cables (this is progress I suppose).
It has a great battery though and does charge quickly, and taking into account the price, you have to give it at least 4 stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars Non Standard USB charger port & Good battery life.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 5 October 2020
Verified Purchase
The first thing to be careful of is that the battery charger port is not a standard USB 3 , so you can not a USB cable from another charger.
The port is larger than a standard small USB port and the cable will fit in two ways which is unlike any USB port I have ever come across.
The port in to the charger itself is a standard USB port.
The other thing to notice is the excellent battery life and while I do not use the Moto G8 heavily I usually have over 70 % battery life at the end of the day.
My previous Moto G4 would get close to running out of charge at the end of the day and had to use the battery saver to last.
I have not used face recognition or finger print reader so I can not comment on how well they work.
The display is very reflective and does not work very well in sunlight although it is fine indoors.
The speed of the Moto G8 is quite adequate for me and is a little bit faster than my old Moto G4.
I have not really used the camera so can not comment on how well it works.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Value - a reasonable compromise between price and specification
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 4 July 2020

For the price you can't really fault this phone. It's fast and got a decent amount of RAM and storage. The battery life is very good. The fingerprint sensor works very well. I'd have liked a compass (I wasn't aware of its absence in this model when I bought the phone) but never mind.

Overall the Moto G8 is a good compromise between price and specification.

EDIT (02/01/2021, several months on from purchase). Still very pleased with the Moto G8 and have upgraded my rating to 5*. I bought another for a friend last September to replace her elderly failing smartphone. She's is happy with the Moto G8.

Yesterday I ordered another new one, this time in white, at the bargain price of £119.95* to use as a back-up in case I break or lose my present one.

* The price has gone back up to £152 today.

EDIT 22/12/2022:
Still got the G8 I originally bought. I also use as a backup and music-centre a G8 with a cracked screen I bought for £30 from a friend. Both perform with any faultls.
I haven't had need to unbox the one I bought as a backup.
Best phone I've ever had in terms of price and performance; worthy of 5 stars.
I hope it's Android 11 can stay the course in terms of supporting future app upgrades.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good budget phone...don't expect a premium device for the money!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 4 September 2020

As a budget phone smartphone, you can't really go wrong with this device, for the price.

I previously used the Moto G7 which had a much crisper display, far more premium. However, the absolutely adequate LCD screen on this has allowed the battery life to be boosted massively and I never now need to worry about carrying a charger with me to work, which to me is a big bonus.

Processing power, no complaints really, it runs everything I need as a user, Netflix, the odd game, and internet/email with ease.

As with all budget phones, the sacrifices are evident, two most frustrating are:

- No NFC (I convinced myself it wouldn't be that bad, it's quite frustrating at times - especially post-covid)

- Camera isnt great, the photo quality is average at best (with good light) and terrible in dark light. Compare the photos to my other half's iPhone 11 photos and they are literally night and day, but what do you expect....this is a sub-£200 phone!

5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful phone... VFM excellent
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 31 January 2021

Love this phone, I previously had the G7, but found it to be underpowered, the 256gb external storage was nearly full, the 32gb internal storage wasn't big enough so I had to delete apps and the 2gb of ram was just not enough, it became laggy and slow. I was looking at the g9 play, but the difference in spec to the g8 was very small, the g9 play reviews mention this, so i went for the cheaper g8. Out of the box it felt solid, it took my 512gb micro SD card and the speed of the phone was lightening fast thanks to the 4gb of RAM, plenty of room for apps thanks to the 64gb internal storage. It is twice as heavy as the g7 but the screen size is a lot bigger and the phone has a bigger battery, so happy to put up with the extra weight. This should keep me going for a couple of years... Then the security updates stop so will need to start looking for an upgrade.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best value Android mobile - and it comes with a case!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 6 November 2020

Being incredibly clumbsy and having 2 small children invariably means that I end up buying new phones a lot more than I would like to (at least one a year) and so I always buy what I consider to be the best budget android phone and as far as I am concerned as at Autumn 2020 this is it.

The phone works flawlessly with all my apps - helped no doubt by the 4gb of ram. The Motorola tweaks to the android operating system are minor and useful. I find that when I have departed from Motorola in the past I have missed them.

The cameras perform well (I like the macro lens) and the app loads relatively quickly given the price point.

The battery life is also great. It will do a full day of heavy usage no problem.

Also worth noting is that it comes with a clear case - wish I'd know that before buying a second one!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good value mid-range phone

This was a replacement for a MotoG5. It runs the latest Android system and has very little bloatware. Transferring information and apps from the old phone to the new was easy. Having a google account means you just logon on the new phone and your profile will set up on it. You may have to login to some apps. The phone was in out of factory condition, so there were a quite a few updates to the android software, but all automatic, just took a bit of time. It has a good screen size, reasonable camera, not top range but pretty good. The fingerprint reader is reasonably easy to set up and is reliable. The battery life is ok and it has fast charge which will take it to about 80% from ~10% in about 20 minutes. For the price this is a very good phone

5.0 out of 5 stars LOVE LOVE LOVE it!

Oh my word - I LOVE this phone. I don't often use a mobile phone, I've never particularly liked doing so, and hardly ever remember to have one with me unless I go out. My older one is a Moto G5 - 5 years old. I'd not taken photos with it (the Moto G5) until recently when I started using it on my walks. I was very surprised - the quality of the photographs is amazing - see photo attached. Anyway, the G5 was a bit sluggish and small and I decided to buy the G8. At last, a phone I actually WANT to use! It is intuitive, responsive, so easy to use. I love the Google Assistant too - just ask it to make a call or send a text. Now I'm finally using a mobile phone instead of a landline!
