Fantastic book, my 7yo daughter enjoyed every bit of it (I read it, she was listening) I spotted two issues: A)The story is in accordance to a patriarchal hierarchy of the family. Mrs Fox gets weak as they hunting goes on, but clever Mr Fox finds a way to save her, the four kids and their friends. So minus one star. B)There is a moral question. Fox steals to save his family and friends, but his friend Badger raises the question if it is ethical to do so. Stealing is always wrong, right? Apparently, not always. This issue can spark lots of thoughts and discussions.
Noted that one earlier reviewerhad complained of the illustrations being in black and white apart from the cover. In my copy all the illustrations were in full colour. Looks to be a good birthday present, but the stated delivery details propmted my earlier review (of it not haveing been delivered). Turns out that 'posted through letterbox' in fact meant it was handed to a neighbour so in fairness a proper review is derserved. Some of the text appears a little daunting for a young child, but might usefully prompt questions about the meaning of some words, widening their vocabulary. Decent quality print, hopefully will wear well.
„Fantastic Mr. Fox“ tells the story of how a fox and his family could escape three sinister hunters.
So you might want to know what is so fantastic about this peculiar Mr. Fox? It is…no I will not tell you instead you have to read it. Mr. Fox lives happily with his wife and their four children under a huge tree . Everyday Mr. Fox goes outside and brings home either chicken, duck, goose or turkey. He finds all the food they need on three farms nearby. The owners of the farms are Boggis, Bounce and Bean, „…one fat, one short, one lean. These horrible crooks. So different in looks. Were none the less equally mean.“ So Mr. Fox must be really clever to get away with his robberies. „They were not men who like anything to give away.“ and he is until this very day everything goes smooth. The three men are on the hunt, they want to eliminate the foxes. So they make a plan: dig out the foxes. First they use shovels and then come the machines and as you might imagine, the foxes will all be dead soon. But then Mr. Fox has a plan of his own. And it is a fantastic one. In this story like in other Dahl books for children, the sinister characters are especially ugly and nasty and the good ones are of course the opposite. So from the beginning you hope everything will go well for the foxes and I can assure you it will. But in between there are a lot of funny, frightening and exciting moments that you will never forget. It is a modern fairytale with fantastic characters, fantastic drawings by Quentin Blake and a fantastic plot. The story was written by Roald Dahl (1916-1990) a former Royal Air Force pilot in the second world war began his writting career soon after the war with stories for kids and for adults. And still today his books are loved. There is a Roald Dahl museum in London which you should visit. There you can the hut. The placquentin blakes e where Dahl wrote his lovely stories.
I’m surprised this was not as great as I expected. It’s a great story but after seeing Wes Anderson’s adaptation into film, the book actually left me wanting. One of those rare cases where the movie is actually better than the book. Really cute book tho.
The book is about a fox with four children and a wife. He is very clever. Because the fox used to take food from Farmers(Boogie, Bunce and Bean) who are awful and mean, he is getting chased by them. My favourite part of the story was when the foxes worked together as a team and began digging the ground even though they were weak and starving. This is how they escaped from danger. I would recommend this book to people who are adventurous and courageous. I would also recommend this book to people who are clever and hard working. I rate this book a four star because the story was very small and the author Roald Dahl could have added more adventure to the story. Overall this was a very good book.
